Spinster Records Manager Kate Siamro Wants Her Store to Reflect Dallas

“The first year I was there, I felt like there were cobwebs in our local section. And now people are coming in, even from places like L.A., and they’re going straight to the local section, because they want to know what’s happening here." - Kate Siamro

Kate Siamro has lived everywhere from Ann Arbor to Australia, but there’s something about Dallas that has compelled her to stay in the city.

“It has a grittiness to it that I love,” she says. “I remember going back up to McKinney after a show in Deep Ellum and being like, ‘I really love Dallas.’”

Siamro is the wildly creative manager of Oak Cliff’s Spinster Records, one of the best vinyl record stores in the country. The store stocks classic records, new releases, and local albums, all of which make it a must-see for music fans of any kind.

In a fun and wide-ranging conversation with Larry Gee on the Artist Uprising podcast, Siamro charts her journey from journalist student to American ex-pat to local music champion and also talks about what it’s like to manage a record store during a pandemic.

"I think there’s going to be a great music explosion here once this all passes,” she says, “and I’m really excited to work at a record store when that happens.”

Their conversation also touches on Siamro’s surprising Coachella gig, her future goals, and how she feels about Dallas’ continued growth.

"Every week, I feel like I meet five people who just moved here. It’s intimidating, but it’s also kind of cool,” she says, “because you have new people to cater to. You have a whole new audience.”
